Poet Lee Bennett Hopkins edited the new children's book, in which poets reflect on paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Having him as a teacher was a life-changing experience and one that has remained with me throughout my life. It was my honor to be Lee’s friend for so many years. Noted poet Lee Bennett Hopkins has edited or authored numerous books for children, including the I Can Read Books Hamsters, Shells, and Spelling Bees; A Pet for Me: Poems; and the ALA Notable Children's Book Surprises.The recipient of a Christopher Award and the University of Southern Mississippi's Medallion for "lasting contributions to children's literature," Mr. Hopkins lives in Florida. In the 1990s, when I first thought, Hey, what’s this children’s poetry stuff?, it was Lee’s anthologies that invited me into the genre. He was the author or editor of over 100 books for children, as well as a number of books and articles for adults. He is the recipient of the 2009 NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children, which honors his body of work, and founder of the Lee Bennett Hopkins Poetry Award and the Lee Bennett Hopkins/IRA Promising Poet Award.
Lee Bennett Hopkins was my 6th grade teacher in Fair Lawn, NJ. Lee Bennett Hopkins (April 13, 1938 – August 8, 2019) was an American educator, poet, author, and anthologist. Lee Bennett Hopkins is “one of America’s most prolific anthologists of poetry for young people,” according to Anthony L. Manna in the Children’s Literature Association Quarterly.The compiler of numerous children’s verse collections, “Hopkins has spent his career trying to make the crystal image accessible to children,” noted Manna. Lee Bennett Hopkins, passionate educator and prolific children’s poet and anthologist, died on August 8 in Cape Coral, Fla., at the age of 81.
