It's all style, climax and special effects. Literally every single thing in the movie is done poorly. Its crew – Captain Miller, second-in-command Lieutenant Starck, pilot Smith, medical technician Peters, engineer Ensign Justin, Doctor D.J. Alien is a haunted house movie.
Unfortunately, "Event Horizon'' is not the movie to answer these questions.
Which was a huge shame as it’s a tense and intensely frightening movie even 20 years after its release.
The rescue vessel Lewis and Clark is dispatched. Watching old space-set sci fi movies is always interesting: everyone smokes, for a start. The events on Event Horizon take place in 2047 which was a good 50 years away when the film came out in 1997, to frankly not very much acclaim. If anything, Event Horizon does the haunted house in space thing better than Alien, although both use settings (or ships) like characters. This characterization of a ship is taken much further in Event Horizon, the titular ship effectively becoming the antagonist. The rules change with every scene. Event Horizon is too, but in a very different way. In 2047, a distress signal is received from the Event Horizon, a starship that disappeared during its maiden voyage to Proxima Centauri seven years ago that has mysteriously reappeared in a decaying orbit around Neptune.
Besides the premise, which I agree is an almost perfect plotline for a space/supernatural horror movie, it is terrible.
For example, early in the film the Lewis and Clark approaches the Event Horizon through what I guess is the stormy atmosphere of Neptune, with lots of thunder, lightning and turbulence. I'd say this movie has a great idea with a terrible execution. I first caught Event Horizon on TV when I was 7, ... Reddit gives this movie wayyyyy too much credit. The event horizon of a black hole is linked to the object's escape velocity — the speed that one would need to exceed to escape the black hole's gravitational pull.
