The building is the second post-modern contribution of the architect Philip Jonson on the Manhattan skyline, after the The Lipstick Building is Johnson's second postmodern contribution to the Manhattan skyline, following his nearby AT&T Building two years earlier. The developer, Gerald D. Hines Interests, asked for a shape that would stand out – and make “every office a corner office.” Located in midtown Manhattan, the Lipstick Building, which gets its name from its shape and the shade of its red granite-and-steel exterior, was completed by Johnson and Burgee in 1986.
